Organization Location:Position is available as fullyRemote Workor as needed at World Bank’sWashington, DCoffices. The Spatial Experiential Designer Consultant is part of the Global Corporate Solutions Department, Interactive Media Services and reports to the Program Manager.

Organization Details

World Bank Group (WBG) uses interactive media to enhance communications efforts, build learning initiatives, support field operations and decision making across its organization. The Interactive Media Services team focuses on delivering affordable, innovative, media products to WBG internal clients by providing the highest level of quality and service. The team coordinates projects that ranges from: VR experiences, Web VR knowledge showcase solutions, learning initiatives, standard and 360 video production, animations, videography (in studio or on location), CGI/3D virtual reality experiences, event activations, augmented reality pieces, data visualization, cartography, photography deliverables and other digital products, consultancy and related services.

Description

The Spatial Experiential Designer will be working on conceptualizing, designing, and implementing immersive experiences that address critical social and development challenges in areas such as climate change, gender equality, basic services access, infrastructure, and digital connectivity. The spatial designer will utilize immersive technologies, including Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), WebXR, 360° films, and interactive installations, to create compelling and impactful content that resonates with diverse audiences, particularly in developing country contexts.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Development:

  • Ideate and propose immersive environments and interactive experiences using XR platforms, ensuring cultural relevance and contextual sensitivity.

  • Design 3D assets, environments, and interfaces for projects across mediums such as VR, AR, WebXR, and 360° films.

  • Collaborate on data visualization projects to create engaging representations of complex datasets for XR applications.

Content Creation:

  • Lead the creation of storyboards, wireframes, and prototypes to align stakeholders on creative direction.

  • Design spatial and immersive narratives that enhance user engagement and understanding of project objectives.

  • Incorporate user feedback to refine and optimize the immersive experiences.

Collaboration and Coordination:

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including project managers, researchers, developers, and subject matter experts.

  • Partner with external vendors and production teams to deliver high-quality content.

  • Act as a bridge between technical teams and non-technical stakeholders to ensure the usability and accessibility of immersive solutions.

Innovation and Research:

  • Stay updated on the latest trends in immersive technologies and incorporate best practices into project design.

  • Explore new tools and methodologies to enhance interactive storytelling and data visualization in XR spaces.

  • Advocate for sustainable, inclusive, and equitable design principles in all project deliverables.

Key Deliverables

  • Immersive experiences tailored to specific development projects (e.g., climate visualization in VR, AR-based health training tools).

  • Comprehensive design documentation, including user journeys, prototypes, and wireframes.

  • Polished 3D assets and animations optimized for XR platforms.

  • Design decks, slides or presentations summarizing concepts and design choices, interactions, user feedback, and projected outcomes.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Education:Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Design, Interaction Design, 3D Modeling, XR Development, or related fields.

  • Experience:

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in immersive design or related fields.

  • Proven expertise in designing and delivering XR experiences.

  • Strong portfolio showcasing VR, AR, 360° films, WebXR, or spatial installation projects.

  • Technical Skills:

  • Proficiency in tools such as Unity, Unreal Engine, Blender, Maya, or equivalent for 3D asset creation and XR development.

  • Familiarity with WebXR standards and frameworks.

  • Experience with data visualization tools and techniques, especially for immersive environments.

  • Proficiency in design tools such as Figma, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.

  • Experience with AI-generated tools for design and content creation.

Soft Skills:

  • Excellent communication and storytelling abilities.

  • Strong collaboration and teamwork skills, especially in multicultural environments.

  • Ability to adapt designs for low-resource settings and diverse end-user needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of human-centered design (HCD) principles.

  • Understanding of accessibility and inclusivity standards in XR design.

  • Basic programming knowledge (e.g., C#, JavaScript) for XR applications.

Work Conditions

  • Remote or in person in Washington, DC.

  • The position is offered as a World Bank Short-Term Consultant (STC) for a maximum of 150 days within one fiscal year period.

  • Flexible working hours to accommodate project deadlines across multiple time zones.
