Job Description

Location:

New York, NY

The role of the Senior Art Director is to assign and art-direct illustration forThe New Yorker, and contribute ideas for illustrated stories and stand alone illustrations. The Senior Art Director will oversee the presentation of illustration in print and across all digital platforms. This role will collaborate with colleagues in the Art Department and the Interactive Department, and work closely with editors, writers, and reporters on a range of articles, from current affairs to cultural reviews. The Senior Art Director will have the opportunity to contribute striking visual content to a magazine built on a legacy of illustration. This is a Guild position.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and art-direct at least six to ten illustrations per week.

  • Design layouts for the art you have assigned, in print and online.

  • Lead design and art direction of special issues, across print and digital platforms.

  • Design support of select brand projects, including but not limited to The New Yorker Festival and in-house ads, across print and digital platforms.

  • Use artistic judgment and discretion to commission art that is witty, memorable, poignant, and smart.

  • Use artistic judgment and discretion to ensure that illustrations have maximum impact in all mediums and products (apps, newsletters, etc.).

  • Manage art preparation for production (trafficking art, checking color, placing art in layout, etc.).

  • Source licensable images when necessary.

  • Collaborate with editors on the assigned work. Manage all invoices and SOWs for the work you’ve assigned.

  • Introduce fresh talent by assigning new illustrators to keep the magazine vibrant.

  • Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager.

  • Skills and Qualifications:

    • B.F.A. in graphic design or illustration preferred.

    • Minimum of four years of experience as an art director assigning illustration.

    • Deep and broad understanding of the illustration field.

    • Conceptual problem solver and fast thinker.

    • The ability to work quickly on deadline in a high-pressure environment.

    • Comfortable with Indesign and the Adobe suite.

    • Great communication and organizational skills.

    • Understanding and awareness of the history ofThe New Yorker.

    • Knowledge of current affairs and politics.

    • Willingness to work some early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

    Salary:

    The expected base salary range for this position is from$90,000 - $150,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
