Computational Design & Robotic Fabrication Lead - Decibel Made (Bloomingdale, NJ)

(March 1st start date)

About Decibel

Using robotic 3D printing and recycled materials, we produce sustainable furniture, installations, and architectural elements with minimal waste. From large-scale wall systems to sculptural seating, our work lives at the intersection of design, technology, and circular manufacturing.

We collaborate with global designers, architects, and brands to realize bold visions that challenge convention—blending artistry with advanced automation to shape a more sustainable future for design.

Role Overview

We’re looking for a Robotic Fabrication Designer who bridges computational design, digital fabrication, and hands-on production.

In this role, you will

  • Program and operate our KUKA based robotic 3D printing systems

  • Develop and prototype Grasshopper-based toolpaths

  • Prepare designs for production and optimize them for large-format printing

  • Help build scalable systems for production, maintenance, and quoting

You’ll work closely with our internal team and customers to bring architectural installations and products from concept to full-scale reality.

Key Responsibilities

Robotics & Toolpaths

  • Program robotic toolpaths in Rhino + Grasshopper using plug-ins such as KUKA|prc + robotic slicer

  • Operate and run Decibel’s industrial robotic 3D printers, including setup, calibration, material prep, and print execution.

  • Prototype and refine toolpaths, print strategies, and motion routines for accuracy, surface quality, and material efficiency.

Design for Production

  • Prepare designs for production, optimizing parts and products for robotic 3D printing in collaboration with internal teams and customers.

  • Translate complex architectural geometry into buildable, efficient fabrication workflows.

  • Experiment with and document new materials (recycled polymers, composites, bio-based blends) and their print behavior.

Production, Vendors & Systems

  • Quote production opportunities in collaboration with the team, supporting cost, time, and feasibility assessments.

  • Manage vendor relationships for materials, components, and services, and help source new solutions as our processes evolve.

  • Develop systems and standards to optimize maintenance, machine readiness, and production workflows for efficiency and scalability.

  • Contribute to internal Grasshopper tools, templates, and documentation to support repeatable, reliable production.

Qualifications

Required

  • Degree in Architecture, Computational Design, Digital Fabrication, Industrial Design, Mechanical/Robotics Engineering, or a related field.

  • Demonstrable experience in Architecture or Design and 3d printing.

  • Strong proficiency in Rhino + Grasshopper and experience creating fabrication-ready definitions.

  • Hands-on experience with robotics, CNC, or 3D printing systems.

  • Understanding of extrusion-based additive manufacturing, path planning, and material behavior.

  • Comfort working in a shop / fabrication environment with large machinery.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to experiment, test, and iterate.

Preferred

  • Experience with KUKA robots and software such as KUKA|prc.

  • Familiarity with large-format or pellet-fed extrusion and multi-axis printing.

  • Python or C# scripting experience inside Grasshopper.

  • Experience working on architectural installations, experimental prototypes, or research projects involving robotic fabrication.

  • Exposure to quoting, basic costing, or production planning is a plus.

Why Join Decibel

  • Shape the future of sustainable, robotic manufacturing for architecture and furniture.

  • Work with a tight-knit team that values experimentation, curiosity, and craft.

  • Access cutting-edge tools—industrial robots, custom extrusion hardware, and advanced digital workflows.

  • See your work realized as full-scale installations and products in real projects and real spaces.
