Job SummaryEthos Veterinary Health is seeking a Design Manager to support development of new locations, existing site relocations, renovations, and expansions. In this role, you will help achieve growth goals by managing the design of world-class facilities, optimizing standards, and overseeing key architecture and design firms. Using strong design, technical, and communication skills, you will champion high priority projects partnering directly with internal and external business teams. We need someone who can balance diving deep into specific project details while never losing site of broader growth goals. Your work will ultimately help achieve Ethos’ plans to provide high-quality medical care for pets and outstanding experiences for clients. This is a visible role that will be regarded as the company’s veterinary design expert, key advisor, and primary resource.

What You’ll DoProject & Production Responsibilities

  • This role and the team’s responsibilities are to drive decision-making in construction scope based on operational and medical requirements. Outputs are interior layouts, building modifications, and aesthetics for new sites, remodels, and innovation projects. These responsibilities typically will include programming, planning, conceptual, and schematic details with occasional requirements to assist in design development and construction drawings.

  • Capture the vision of the local teams who will ultimately lead and practice medicine within the sites, facilitate informal and formal space plan reviews, and decide project scopes of work

  • Drive, develop and coordinate design across the portfolio of projects, develop and adhere to schedules, and prioritize workload

  • This role is responsible for organizing and managing many preapproval/due diligence actions including site surveys and building conditions reports, scoping visits and calls, researching codes, civil requirements, and jurisdictional requirements. Strong partnership with new site operations, real estate, and construction as it relates to work letter exhibits, equipment, drawing strategy, and bid strategy/packaging. All of this contributes toward the creation of the feasibility handoff packages for each project – which facilitates approval and sets the tone for the entire project

  • You will collaborate with and lead partners in cross functional work streams (3rd party Architects, Site Developers, Construction, Sourcing/Procurement, Field Operations, IT, Marketing, New Site Operations) to ensure project scope aligns with schedule and budget priorities.

  • By extension, this role is also responsible for dictating and advising on MEP scope, including HVAC, medical gas and plumbing requirements, power upgrades, as well as IT/low voltage coordination

  • At times this role may be responsible for ground-up construction project scoping and the decisions associated with the entire site’s scope of work

  • Prototypes, Specifications, Standards, And Preferred Equipment Support

    • You will lead the coordination and development of standard design criteria (e.g. prototype) to ensure consistent, efficient and successful deployment of new sites, remodels, and special projects.

    • Responsible for regular updates to the prototype standards, managing multiple design versions and the overall design library. These may include design prototype standards for different functions and specialties, and assorted floorplans for reference and guidance to sites and strategic leaders.

    • This position is appointed as the design liaison to the strategic advisory board. Through this responsibility, the design manager owns the relationship with the medical operations team and the medical professionals on the board.

    • Manage prototypical standards regarding medical requirements and regulations (such as oncology requirements)

    • Partner with internal cross-functional teams to dig into root causes of design issues or changes in requirements that can be integrated into prototypical details

    • Find efficiencies and create best practices. You will be on the lookout to identify process improvements, highlight potential time or cost savings, and create plans to implement them.

    Functional Responsibilities

    • This role reports to the Director, Design and Construction and is visible at times to the highest levels of the company and will require presentations and updates as it relates to the design function. These may include presenting look books, prototypes, and innovations

    • This role will create and maintain key relationships in adjacent departments including procurement, the SAB, and operations

    • You’ll be comfortable following up on action items, providing feedback, and escalating issues should they arise.

    • Assorted tasks and stretch assignments related to the department, projects, team, and goals

    • Vendor manager of all architecture firms and if at times engineering firms and other consultants are procured directly, including vendor relationships, processing architecture contracts, purchase orders, and change orders

    • Manager of others: oversee the team of internal design professionals. This role includes supervision and mentorship of the interior designer whose scope includes furniture, signage, and other FF&E procurement and vendor management

    • Supplement and provide support as construction manager if and when needed due to workload and personnel constraints. This to include all responsibilities normally extended to CM role at the project level.

    What You’ll Need

    • At least 10+ years of design experience. Previous work with veterinary, human medical, personal care, and/or pet-related businesses is preferred.

    • 4 year, accredited degree in Architecture, Industrial Design or similar field required.

    • Excellent design and technical skills (e.g. sketches, CAD, 2D and 3D software, Microsoft Office) to aid in the development of design proposals that align with business strategies

    • “Get it done” attitude. You will succeed in this role if you are a self-starter who is resourceful, collaborative, and solution oriented.

    • Exceptional communication skills, comfort working remote/via video, and ability to employ sound judgment and establish next steps to resolve matters of high complexity.

    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, both from your home office and in person, to achieve priorities.

    • A love for design details, adhering to schedules, and meeting budgets

    • Knowledge of Revit/CAD software is required

    • Travel may be required as appropriate and able, up to 30%

    The base salary range for this full-time position is$120,000 - $155,000.Our salary ranges are primarily determined by role, level, and location. The range provided for each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. The Company offers competitive compensation along with a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision benefits, vacation, sick leave, 401(k), and more depending on location.
