Space Center Houston is a space exploration learning destination dedicated to revealing how science and humanity power space exploration through meaningful, moving experiences about people and the courage, innovation, and teamwork they use to expand the boundaries of what's possible. We inspire guests of all ages to connect with the significance of space exploration as incredible feats of human spaceflight continue to bring joy and wonder to the world. Owned and operated by the nonprofit Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, we are the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center and a Smithsonian affiliate.

We are seeking a full-time Experience Graphic Designer responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and producing high-quality print and digital graphics for experiences and exhibitions at Space Center Houston. This includes creating production-ready files for both physical and digital displays that align with the organization’s brand guidelines. The designer ensures that all design projects enhance the overall experience. Through their work, the designer plays a key role in showcasing Space Center Houston as a premier destination and an employer of choice. Responsibilities and qualifications are shown below:

Salary:

$65K/yr - $70K/yr

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creative attractive and engaging presentations (both internal and external) that clearly communicate design ideas and concepts.

  • Produce visually compelling, production-ready graphics for current and upcoming exhibits. The role requires a strong, creative proficiency in design software, including Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop), InDesign, PowerPoint, and other layout and publishing tools. Develop and concept graphic concepts to convey the organization’s messaging and brand strategy through design.

  • Collaborate closely with internal and external partners to deliver materials and assets that effectively communicate our experiential interpretive goals. The role requires working with a creative team to meet tight deadlines and embrace a collaborative approach.

  • Give accurate project timeline projections, acquire approvals and meet deadlines while managing and executing multiple projects and priorities (both independently and working with a team) by using project management systems and advanced organizational skills.

  • Maintain quality control and carry projects through to execution, including acquiring bids, file setup, sending artwork to press and final proofs.

  • Utilize the organization’s resources effectively by obtaining multiple bids from vendors and recommending the most qualified and cost-efficient options, prioritizing high-quality results.

  • Research and stay current with graphic-design marketing and public relations trends and share information with director and team. Serve as an expert advisor on graphic design and brand strategy to the organization.

  • Become a subject matter expert on our branded PowerPoint template and provide training and guidance to internal users to ensure implementation of a cohesive look and feel.

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and processes for area of responsibility, as well as logo and identity brand standards.

  • Serve key internal department client(s) with its communications needs (public relations, marketing and other messaging) by developing creative briefs and strategic communications plans and working with department colleagues to ensure plan is executed in a timely manner.

  • Support the work of, and collaborate with, other Communications Team members.

  • Use communication skills to influence, guide and motivate stakeholders internally and externally with tact, reasoning and sensitivity.

  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

  • POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts and Applied Design, Graphic Design, Graphic Arts, Marketing or a related field.

    • A minimum of five years of professional experience in graphic design and production.

    • Highly skilled in Adobe Creative Suite with strong experience in Illustrator and Photoshop. Knowledge of HTML and CSS required. Preferred experience with CMS editing, specifically WordPress, and Java. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite. Comfortable and able to work with Microsoft Windows-based computers.

    • Advanced knowledge of branding and its use in marketing and public relations. Able to uphold brand requirements and goals while pushing creative boundaries.

    • Expert knowledge of graphic design best practices and principles for print, web, social media and other digital projects.

    • Demonstrates creative flair, originality and a strong visual sense for branding and integrating visual elements across multiple mediums in print and digital.

    • Strong attention to detail, especially in proofing and making accurate edits, and an ability to solve problems and offer solutions.

    • High level of professionalism, energy, enthusiasm and collaboration. Able to give and accept constructive criticism. Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written skills in order to interact with various internal and external stakeholders.

    • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage and set multiple priorities, both independently and working with a team. Gives accurate project timeline projections, acquires approvals and meets deadlines.

    • Available to work flexible hours including some weekends and/or nights.

    • Photography, videography and video editing experiences are pluses.

    • Experience with an agency is a plus.
