Creative Urban Alchemy LLC (CUA) is anaward-winningurban design & planning studio working at the intersection of art, architecture, urban design and planning centering cultural heritage and equity in praxis.CUA has worked in the sectors of arts & culture, housing & community development, climate & environmental justice, health & wellness and community safety. Our work focuses on the ideation and strategy development that is rooted in the engagement process. We aim to transform places and spaces in a way that builds community agency and improved partnerships between the grassroots and institutional.

The Role

As a community designer, you will be responsible for supporting projects from initial to final stages, including research support; production of engagement, design, and strategy materials; and coordination of project collaborators and project activities. The CUA Design team current consists of a small team mostly working remotely and each person is project based. We seek a thoughtful, creative, and extremely organized individual with experience in design, planning, urban studies, or community development and a demonstrated commitment to and passion for advancing racial, social, and spatial justice. You will be involved with transformative community-engaged design and planning, managing organizational systems, and working with a diversity of stakeholders from city agencies, community residents to designers to nonprofit leaders.

  • Support the coordination and activities of project-related community advisory committees

  • Provide remote coordination support for project-related engagement activities

  • Help develop and manage community engagement tools and graphics; support community engagement through the production of graphics, community engagement tools and facilitation of workshop meetings (in person or virtual), video editing/live action/graphics

  • Research

    • Help support quantitative, qualitative, and secondary research in areas related to community engagement, spatial and racial justice, trauma and grief, and community- based healing

    • Production of GIS mapping and other info graphics

    • Assist with the synthesis of research data and its translation into accessible and dynamic graphic products

    • Support report development through the creation of diagrams, design research and written content

    Project Management

    • Help manage and coordinate multiple projects to ensure they are proceeding on track

    • Organize project tasks and schedules

    • Communicate project status to stakeholders and key project participants

    Design

    • Support design development through developing design concepts, massing studies, technical drawings and renderings using appropriate computer software

    Other graphic support

    • Assist with grant and RFP proposal responses as needed

    • Assist with development of thought leadership presentations as needed

    • Support marketing proposal development through the graphic production of indesign templates and inputting team content

    The following skills are required for this role:

    • Track record of commitment to low-income communities of color and advancing racial and social justice

    • Demonstrable problem-solving and project management skills, including multitasking and meeting deadlines

    • 2-4 years of related work experience in design, architecture, urban planning, public policy, or community development

    • A design degree (bachelor’s visual arts, architectural design, masters in urban design, master’s degree in landscape architecture)

    • Strong interpersonal communication and leadership skills

    • Strong organizational, time management

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills

    • Ability to take initiative and work creatively

    • Experience in working well in collaborative teams/environment

    • Solid research and community engagement experience

    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools

    The following skills are preferred qualifications:

    • Graphic skills (proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite)

    • Comfortable working in unstructured environment and working remotely

    • BIPOC candidates are strongly encouraged to apply

    Terms

    This is a 100% remote contractor position for approximately 10-15 hrs/week. We’re looking to fill this role around mid-September. Health insurance, retirement plans, and work resources are not included. Some travel may be involved. Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to do any visa sponsorship.
