Job Summary 

The Sr. Manager of Sustainability is responsible for spearheading the development and alignment of the company’s strategic objectives related to sustainability impact and innovation across the organization.  This role will foster a collaborative community focused on sustainable practices across the organization, balancing company initiatives and utilizing internal and external resources to be successful.  As the highest-level subject matter expert on sustainability, this role collaborates and guides members of cross-functional departments (Product/Brand/Strategy, Finance, Legal, Supply Chain, Facilities, IT, etc.) and directly leads the sustainability team to ensure timely progress with the future-focused roadmap.

Associate Responsibilities

  • Coach, mentor and develop a team of Sustainability professionals, including a Sustainability Analyst and a Sustainability Project Manager

  • Develop and manage the department budget, as well as reporting on qualitative and quantitative results

  • Develop and operationalize Carhartt’s sustainability strategy, with annual and long terms goals that include a realistic roadmap that is aligned with Carhartt’s overall goals and objectives

  • Oversee and monitor the progress of multiple sustainability department and corporate initiatives; communicating results and opportunities for improvement, with the goal of fostering a collaborative community around sustainability

  • Manage Carhartt’s overall environmental impact workstreams, including Green House Gas emissions (Scope 1, Scope 2, Scope 3), water and waste by outlining the reduction targets and strategic reduction planning needed to meet our corporate goals

  • Oversight of the identification, implementation and execution of measurement systems and tools to track Carhartt’s progress against key sustainability goals, ratings and frameworks

  • Provide thought leadership across cross-functional sustainability teams, including the leadership steering committee and department working committee, to ensure alignment on company sustainability priorities

  • Partner cross-functionally with Global Social Responsibility and Legal teams on the build out and ongoing surveillance of Carhartt’s Regulatory Reporting Framework, as it relates to our environmental impact and mandatory and voluntary reporting requirements

  • Responsible for the identification, onboarding and management of multiple vendors that provide the expertise and supplemental resources necessary to achieve our sustainability goals

  • Engage with third-party associations and industry groups to guide research and benchmarking to keep up with the rapidly evolving landscape of this work

 

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability or related field, or equivalent experience in lieu of degree

  • Advanced degree preferred (e.g., MBA, Climate Science, Environmental Science, Sustainability)

Required Skills & Experience

  • 8+ years of experience in Sustainability including progressive experience with another global leading manufacturer (preferably within an apparel, consumer-packaged goods (CPG) company, or within consulting)

  • Experience in Green House Gas Accounting (Scope 1, Scope 2, Scope 3 emissions) and ability to direct a team on data management to make it actionable

  • Experience with GHG accounting software, for example Carbonfact, Worldly (formally Higg Index), etc preferred

  • Experience with VPPA’s and/or renewable energy preferred

  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to execute programs that achieve sustainability goals.

  • Ability to persuade and influence cross-functionally, without having direct authority, to drive solutions

  • Team mentality, passion for sustainability and leading transformative changes in the ways of working; ability to connect the dots.

  • Outstanding organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize workload and attention to detail

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the proven ability to communicate with all levels within the organization to build cross-functional competence with sustainability

  • Advanced experience and proficiency using Excel, PowerPoint/Keynote, Word, etc.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

  • Travel – 10%

  • This position has a Remote location: Associate will have no regular requirement to be on-site. Travel on-site is limited to special events.
